THE QUIZ was built in 1872 by Halls of Paglesham as an Essex smack. She is of timber carvel construction, larch on oak frames with pine decks. She was commissioned by Wisemans, oyster merchants of Brightlingsea, to join their fleet of Essex smacks and spent most of her working years in the Swale and Medway. She came to rest in the River Deben in the mid 1960s and fell into disrepair until purchased by Frank Knights who rebuilt a new top on her old bottom during the early 1980s as a working boat, converting her into a leisure craft in 1988.
She is presently undergoing a major rebuild replacing her original 1872 bottom by Gerard Swift, Ross and Conor Wey, her present owners.
